" Possible causes and what to do about them "
Baby skin is soft and sensitive. If small red spots, pimples or even a rash suddenly appear on it, parents are right to be concerned. However, a baby rash is not uncommon and occurs due to various triggers.
To the pediatrician in the event of a rash
Fortunately, in the vast majority of cases, if a baby is diagnosed with a rash, it is neither an allergy nor a serious illness. As a precautionary measure, it is always advisable to consult a pediatrician if any changes are visible on the skin. They can quickly tell whether the symptoms are serious or harmless.
A visit to the pediatrician is advisable for rashes
What type of rash is particularly common?
A rash can have several causes. To give you an overview, we have briefly outlined the most common ones.
Acne
Most people think of teenagers when they think of acne, and of course not of a baby. But this form of rash occurs mainly in the first few days of life. As suddenly as they appear, the little pimples disappear again. This is due to the skin adapting to its new environment. In addition, the small skin glands may still be a little congested. Parents should avoid squeezing the pimples at all costs.
For care, we recommend washing with a soft terry cloth washcloth and clean water without any additives. Only dry skin should be treated with an additional lotion or baby cream. Otherwise, no further treatment is required.
Rash after a fever
Three-day fever is an infectious disease that is accompanied by a fever and subsequent skin rash. Many children experience this rather harmless illness. After the fever subsides, the rash appears, but it is not serious. It usually subsides on its own within the next three days.
A rash often occurs after a fever
Wheals and hives
If a rash develops on babies and children, which is characterized by slightly raised areas of skin or small pustules, experts speak of so-called hives. This is an irritant reaction that can be caused by a variety of factors. These include
- new foods
- plants
- insect bites
- contact with animals
- medicines
- Color in new clothes
Baby skin may react sensitively to new things
Occasionally even a slight fever may occur. In any case, wheals should always be checked by a pediatrician. The symptoms can often be an indication of an allergy.
Redness and irritation in the diaper area
Diaper thrush is a disease that occurs exclusively in the child's diaper area. Here the skin shows redness, is scaly or a little pimply. Change the diaper more often than necessary and give your little one the opportunity to lie diaper-free from time to time. The air supports the healing process. If you are out and about with your little one, it is best to carry a diaper bag in which you can store diapers. This way, you can also ensure diaper freshness when you are out and about.
Cradle cap on the head
This is not an allergy or illness, but rather a cosmetic problem. The scaly, usually quite sticky rash on children's skin appears when they are babies and usually disappears on its own. The yellowish scales on the scalp should never be removed by intensive brushing. Rubbing with a towel does more harm than good. A little olive oil is recommended for treatment. Gently rub it into the scalp. The scabs can then be gently combed out.
Weeping rash
Atopic dermatitis is a widespread skin disease. This disease sometimes manifests itself as early as infancy. It is characterized by reddening of the skin and a weeping rash, which can appear on the baby's face, behind the ears or in the crook of the arms. In this case, it is important to consult a pediatrician or dermatologist if atopic dermatitis is suspected. There are numerous treatment methods that are advertised as home remedies, but are less likely to be recommended for use. It is better to consult a specialist.
Prevention is better than cure: Protect baby skin from direct sunlight
Children's skin is not able to protect itself in the early stages of life. Babies and children under the age of three should avoid direct sunlight wherever possible. In any case, the skin must be protected from UV radiation with appropriate lotion. Many parents fail to realize that this radiation also occurs in the shade. Although not as intense, skin protection is essential.
A high sun protection factor as well as appropriate sun protection on the head are mandatory during the hot days.
Skin rash on babies in winter: Be careful in frosty temperatures!
As in midsummer, sensitive skin also reacts to extreme cold. If a rash appears after a long walk in the freezing cold, then the cold may be responsible. Protect your child's skin from drying out in cold weather by using a rich weather protection cream. This acts like a small protective film on the skin.
In winter, make sure that your baby's skin does not become too dry
Caring for sensitive baby skin - less is often more
Children's delicate skin needs special and above all very gentle care to treat or prevent skin rashes. When using soaps and shampoos, make sure that they are suitable for children and are as fragrance-free as possible. Baby soap is precisely tailored to the needs of very young children. For washing, we recommend nice, soft washcloths that you can gently stroke over the skin. After bathing, your little one must always be dried thoroughly. Pay attention to the small folds of skin on the neck, behind the ears or on the legs and under the arms. Extra soft shower towels or a baby poncho are ideal for this. As long as the skin is not dry or flaky, it does not need any further care. Otherwise, baby oils have proven to be very effective moisturizers.
As you can see: A wide variety of rashes can occur, but they rarely lead to serious illness. Nevertheless, it is always necessary to consult a doctor, as it has been proven that there are enough childhood illnesses that occur with an intense skin rash in babies and children. And, as we all know, it is better to be safe than sorry.
