Making dreamcatchers for children

" Homemade creations watch over the baby's bed "

It is such a peaceful and wonderful moment when your child is sleeping peacefully. The breathing is even and the baby's deep relaxation can be seen. It's no wonder that parents don't want to disturb such an almost sacred moment. After all, restful and peaceful sleep is of great importance for a child's development. Everyone can decide for themselves what contribution dream catchers can make to this. In any case, making them together brings great joy.

Where does the dreamcatcher come from

It was the Indians of North America who attached the dreamcatcher, which is now known worldwide, above the resting areas. These cult objects can still be found in bedrooms today, and even in this country they are becoming increasingly popular.

Meaning and purpose among the Indians?

The dreamcatcher was known to some Native American tribes. Today, the true origin is attributed to the Chippewa Indians. This cult object comes from the Ojibwe culture. From a linguistic point of view, it roughly means spider's web. This also explains the appearance of classic Dreamcatchers.

The Native Americans believed that evil spirits and demons would approach sleepers during their sleep and haunt them in the form of bad dreams.

To prevent this, dream catchers were hung up. The evil spirits became entangled in the nets, preventing them from reaching the sleeping person. The colorful beads also ensured that the demons were distracted.

With the first light of day, the dark spirits burned up and disappeared. The good souls and thoughts, on the other hand, were able to pass through the fine net unhindered. Sleep was thus protected and even the thoughts could not be bound by bad dreams.

Beautiful wall decoration

Those who are not too keen on the spiritual significance of this object will still be impressed by its beautiful shape and design. Many people hang this Native American art as a wall decoration without knowing its true meaning. The dream catcher will definitely find a place above the crib in your child's room. Not only visually does it enhance the ambience as a wall decoration. The belief in it alone may help some children to fall asleep.

Making dreamcatchers for children: Here's how!

It's easy to buy a ready-made dreamcatcher. But it's even better to try your hand at it yourself and create a childlike dreamcatcher together with your little ones. Let yourself be inspired by the wide range of possibilities, because each one has something very special about it. Making a dreamcatcher yourself is not that difficult. You will find most of the craft materials you need in the Zwergehuus craft shop.

Starting with beautiful motif beads over classic wooden beads to the stringing cord. You will also need a small wooden ring (diameter should be around 20 cm), a sewing needle, craft glue and then you're ready to go:

The wooden ring serves as the basis. You can also use alternatives such as a rattan ring. Depending on what you like better. Now wrap a string around this ring. There are countless color variations to choose from.

Start by tying a tight knot. You can also fix this with some craft glue. The same applies when you have completely wrapped the ring with the string. Make a knot here too and fix it with a little glue.

Weave the net

Now it's time to weave the net. It's a little tricky at first, but in the end it's not quite so complicated. The sewing needle is now used. Use another threading cord for this. In this case, we recommend the color white. This will give the craft beads and motif beads a better accent later on.

First, divide the ring into approximately ten equal sections. Now start pulling the cord through the ring (through the wrapped cord) from the top and then go to the first imaginary mark. Place the cord around the ring and pull it through the wrapped cord again. Continue until you have a first, tight net at the edge of the ring.

Now continue with the "second row".

Instead of placing the thread on the ring, the loops are now placed around the thread of the "first round" and fastened with a loop. A little skill is required, but you'll get there.

Accents are important when crafting

You can now start decorating the net with beads from the second or third round. To do this, simply thread a bead of your choice onto the thread. This is fixed in place by laying the loops.

Feel free to let your imagination run wild. Beads with motifs such as animals or flowers look particularly beautiful when you are making a dreamcatcher for children. When the net is finished, knot the last end of the string.

The cords at the bottom end

Once the net has been woven and the beads are in place, it is now time to make the strings and threads for the lower part of the dreamcatcher. With so many craft ideas, you are sure to come across a multitude of variations.

We use threading cords in different colors. To make a stronger cord, weave a cord from three strings. Knot the bottom end and open the loose ends a little so that the individual fine threads can be seen. You can make several stronger cords in this way. As an accent, simply alternate a string with various beads and motifs.

Of course, you can also use other materials for a dreamcatcher for children. Finally, tie the strings to the ring and you have your own dreamcatcher.

Other craft ideas and variations

Instead of a large ring, you can also use smaller rings. A dreamcatcher does not necessarily have to hang above the crib as a wall decoration. For example, you can make a smaller catcher for the baby carriage or for the car. Small dreamcatchers are less time-consuming as you have to weave a much smaller net. But even these small versions look stunning and are just as much fun to make.
