Craft ideas for the garden: make beautiful garden decorations yourself
Homemade garden decorations are always much more interesting than ready-made decorations from the garden center. If you would like to make yourself comfortable in the summer among beautiful decorative elements, you can easily make individual decorations for the garden yourself. Small, colorful highlights visually enhance your garden in summer and ensure that your whole family can feel completely at ease.
In the following lines, we present three easy-to-implement craft ideas for summer crafts, for which you only need a few craft materials and which can also be made together with children without much effort.
Making beautiful wind chimes from colorful beads
You will need- Metal pasta strainer (diameter approx. 23 cm)
- Wooden beads in different colors and sizes
- decorative elements
- some nylon cord
- a thin rope
- scissors, needle and threader
Wind chime with bell
- First cut six pieces of nylon cord 60 and 30 cm long. The long cords will later become the chains and the short pieces will be the tassels.
- Thread the cord through the eye of the needle using the threader and string on one of the wooden beads. Then tie a double knot on the string. You must leave about 10 cm of the string protruding, as these remaining pieces will be used to attach the chains to the sieve.
- Gradually string the beads onto the cord until you have reached a chain length of around 45 cm. Always knot the last bead here too.
- Proceed in a similar way with the tassels, but you can add heavier and larger beads to the end piece so that your wind chime can move freely in the wind.
- As soon as you hang the rope in the middle of the sieve. Hang your wind chime in a nice spot in the garden.
- Finally, attach the tassels to the hanging bead chains with a double knot and your colorful garden decoration is ready.
Embellish flower pot
Flower pots with the most colorful flowers and plants are everywhere in the garden, and their blooming splendor is an eye-catcher in itself. The pots become even more beautiful when you get creative. Painting the pots is a wonderful joint activity for parents and children. Clay pots in particular are excellent for painting. What colors and patterns can you choose? Your own taste decides. It may be helpful to cut a few stencils out of cardboard. Of course, you can also paint freehand.
Painting a flower pot
In addition or as an alternative, the clay pot can be enhanced with craft beads. You can distribute different colored craft beads in the saucer around the plant pot or attach the beads to the pot as a chain so that they run all the way around it. It is best to use wooden beads, which you can thread onto the string as desired. Of course, measure the length of the string beforehand so that it really encircles the pot. It is only by tightening the string that the necklace may slip off. You should therefore attach some of the beads with the appropriate two-component glue. This work is of course intended for adults. However, you don't need to make a string of beads, you can also glue the beads in a criss-cross pattern to the plant pot. But here, too, the child should stay away from the glue. Alternatively, you can make several smaller chains and let them hang from the edge of the pot. Glue can also help here, or if there is a small tree in the pot, the string can also be attached to a branch. Hanging pots in particular can be enhanced in this way.
Decoration idea "Make new from old": Upcycling garden decorations
Individual garden decorations can also be made from individual tables, chairs or watering cans from grandma's time. What some people throw away is a welcome collector's item with a unique character for others. Even if one or two chairs are no longer suitable for sitting on, you can still breathe new life into these objects with a creative decoration idea.
The special thing about used and old objects is usually simply the beauty of the antique materials and shapes. Elements made of metal, ceramic, wood, tin, sheet metal or enamel add a touch of romance to almost any garden. It is therefore worth taking a look in the cellar or attic: There are often many hidden treasures to be found there, just waiting to be rediscovered and make a big splash once again. A new coat of paint or even a change of use can quickly transform a unique item into a great one-off. For example, the old wine barrel can serve as an excellent new table or the chair can be transformed into an individual planter in no time at all.
Ready for upcycling
Find a nice place in the garden for your new decorative element where it can be shown to its best advantage. Also make sure that it is not too exposed to the elements. If you want to plant beautiful flowers in an old milk jug or wash tub, you should definitely integrate a drain at the bottom so that the new inhabitants don't drown.
