" Summery decoration that turns the window into an aquarium "
Rays of sunlight shine through clear water and illuminate a colorful and varied underwater world. If you don't own an aquarium, you can create a wonderful window decoration for the summer with a little creativity and fun. We'll show you how to make fish with children and create a unique summer decoration. We start the project with lots of great craft ideas: fish in a window aquarium!
Summer decorations with a difference
Flowers, parasols and shells usually dominate the scene when it comes to making pretty summer decorations. However, there are many other beautiful summer-themed craft ideas. Above all, colorful fish and the truly fascinating underwater world have so much potential as summer decorations. Today we want to embellish the windows and transform them into a magical aquarium.
You will need the following craft materials for this:
- Nuscheli in blue, yellow, green and white
- String in different colors
- Chenille wire
- cardboard
- wooden beads, crochet beads and lentil beads in various designs and colors
- crepe paper
- craft wire
- sticking clay
- scissors
- needle
It is best to have all the necessary utensils ready to hand. Don't forget to protect the table with a blanket and tie an apron around your child. Once all the preparations have been made, you can get started. Incidentally, the warm summer days are perfect for getting creative outdoors.

Making fish with children: three great craft ideas
Let's start with the colorful inhabitants of the underwater world. There are so many different types of sea creatures that there are countless ways to create them. When young children make fish, finger paints and clay paper are usually enough. If you are making fish with children who are a little older, there are of course even more variations to choose from.
We give you three great craft ideas that become increasingly sophisticated:
Fish made from clay paper and finger paint
For the youngest artists, we recommend making sea creatures out of clay paper and finger paints. Set aside the following materials for this:
- Clay paper
- scissors
- finger paints
- String
- Cut out simple fish shapes, jellyfish and octopuses from the paper.
- Now let your child color the animals with the finger paints. The front and back should be beautifully colorful. Once dry, take a black fineliner and draw in a few scales or the suction cups of the octopuses. You can stick on the eyes using white paper.
- Now punch a small hole in the middle and thread the strings through. Now we have a nice selection of small fish and other animals for the window aquarium to hang up.

Making fish from chenille wire
Dolphins can be wonderfully created from flexible chenille wire. They can also be made in completely different colors. This gives the aquarium a colorful touch. To do this, simply bend the craft wire into the desired shape and fix it in place by layering and twisting it. This creates a wide variety of fish.

Colorful puffer fish with crochet beads
Fish can be made using crochet beads, which is a little more time-consuming but all the more colorful and unique. For this project, we need cardboard (or paper plates), crochet beads in all imaginable colors, threading cords and a needle.
- First, cut a basic shape out of the cardboard that resembles a spherical fish. A nice round belly, fins and a head.
- First, color the cardboard with some paint. It is best to use light shades and two different colors at most. This is because the crochet beads are the focus of the color.
- After drying, the colorful crochet beads are finally used. These are sewn close together on the belly. Simply thread them through the cardboard with a long string (you can also use a colorful string) and the needle and continue until the entire belly is decorated with colorful beads.
Shells, corals, sea plants - craft ideas for the underwater world
Making fish is one thing. But to complete the summer decorations under the theme of the underwater world, let's turn our attention to plants, shells and corals. Together with the children, you can gradually create an entire reef.
All we need for the shells is some cardboard and light-colored shells
Cut out the typical shape of the shell from the cardboard and then wrap the cloth over it. Light colors such as white, beige or cream are ideal. Fix a little and draw thin lines with a fabric crayon to create the familiar design of the shell. The corals are wonderfully colorful and can be created with sticking clay, craft wire, crepe paper and muslins.
A disused flower box or flower pot serves as a base. Place the sticking material in it. It is now best to place blue muslins (preferably in two different shades) on top and secure them with a few pins. Now stick the craft wire close together in small groups. Then wrap the wire with crepe paper.
You can add thin strings to add a decorative touch. Water plants are of course also part of our craft ideas. The easiest way to make them is with the help of crepe paper. If possible, use different shades of green to make this decoration look a little more lively.
Finishing the window aquarium as a summer decoration
Crafting with children was another fun experience. Now it's time to arrange the individual elements nicely. First of all, attach a light blue Nuscheli to the window. In the lower area, a darker blue looks more intense and stands out nicely in terms of color. Place light-colored shells on the windowsill as a base for the window picture. Place the coral pot on top. Our shells will find a suitable spot around it and the puffer fish will also feel very much at home here.
All the little fish, jellyfish and octopuses from the craft are now attached to strings at different heights. This gives the impression that they are gliding through the water. Attach the aquatic plants made from crepe paper in the same way. To give all of this a colorful accent, string lots of colorful beads with your children.
Alternate between colored wooden beads and smooth lentil beads. Place the necklaces on the seabed or hang one or two between the fish. A great summer decoration is ready. These attractive craft ideas can be extended and added to in a variety of ways.
If you don't want to create a window aquarium, then use these craft ideas for a large collage. With a little craftsmanship, you can make a sturdy frame from wooden slats and attach a thin wooden panel as a back wall. Not only can you make fish with the children, you can also use a paintbrush to immortalize delicate details on the back wall.
A fantastic project that often can't be completed in one day. But the summer is long and the vacation season is a wonderful time to get creative with children. And now have fun!
